A room with a view

Here at Topflite Loft Conversions we create the perfect loft conversion for your property. Depending on your property type, the kind of roof you have and the specific requirements you have, we have plenty of loft conversion ideas for you.

One thing we are experts at is knowing which kind of loft conversion will suit your home and your needs. Below we have highlighted the four main kinds. So, if you want a room with a view you can opt for a Velux loft conversion or a dormer loft conversion.

Velux loft conversion

These are also known as a roof-light conversion. This is because a Velux window is essentially a window in your roof. The walls within your loft conversion will be sloping, in line with the roof. With the recent changes in planning permission laws, no planning permission is required for this kind of loft conversion. They are also extremely cost effective.

Dormer loft conversion

A dormer will extend the current print of the roof. More floorspace and headroom will be added and it will sit above from the rest of the roof. There are various different styles of dormer loft conversions. The walls will be vertical and the ceilings will be horizontal, unlike that of a Velux loft conversion.

There are other types of loft conversions too;

Mansard loft conversion

This is named after the 17th century architect who first used this style. This loft conversion will allow the use of the maximum amount of space in your loft. The slope will be as vertical as possible and the top slope is almost horizontal. It is a simple way to add more storey’s to your property.

Hip to gable loft conversion

This is the best type of loft conversion for those with hip roofs. This is where the roof slopes at an angle from walls to apex. Often there is not enough space in the roof to create a full loft conversion so the gable wall is built upon to level with the hip roof.

But, if you are not sure what to use the extra space for, we have plenty of loft conversion ideas for you.

Here are just a few things you could do:

Master suite

Depending on how large your loft is, you could create a master suite with en-suite bathroom.  So, whether you want to move into it yourself, or keep it as guest bedroom, you have a space that is fit for a king.

Play area

Another great loft conversion idea is a play area for your children.  You can create a space that lets them have an area that is just for them.  Whether you have young children or a house full of teenagers, a play area or games room is a great way to keep the noise all in one place!

Work out

If you love to work out why not use the space as a gym?  You can kit it out with all the equipment you need.  You can even add an en-suite shower room to give it a real gym feel.

Home office

Another popular use of loft conversions is the home office.  Whether you work from home everyday or simply need a space for those few days each month that you do, a home office is a great solution.  You are neatly tucked away from all the noise going on in the rest of the house.

Transform your loft conversion with lighting

Lighting in your loft conversion is a key feature.  It is often something that is left to the last minute, but actually a lot of care and consideration should go into this decision.

You need to think about how you wish your loft conversion to be lit.  Here are a few questions you should ask yourself:

  • Are there certain areas that need to be better lit than others?
  • Do you have sloping ceilings? You need to take these into consideration
  • Do you want to be eco friendly?
  • Do you need different types of lighting in different areas?
  • Do you want a dimmer switch?

If you want to save money, be green and opt for lighting that looks modern and sleek, why not chose LED bulbs?  LED bulbs use around 1 to 5 watts of power.  If this means nothing to you, did you know that a standard GU10 (halogen bulb) uses around 30 to 50 watts of power.

Think of all the money you will save on your energy bills! They are more expensive but will last longer and use low energy.

So, what is the right bulb for your loft conversion?

Well, if you are after a really bright bulb that gives off a white, clear light then you are best off with a 3000K halogen bulb.  If you want something slightly warmer and less of a harsh light then a 2700K halogen is best.

But, if you want something that is energy saving and will help to reduce your carbon footprint then opt for a LED bulb. Whatever bulb you go for make sure that you have enough to keep your loft conversion bright and warm, but not too many that it overpowers it.

How to choose the right velux window in six easy steps

When it comes to your loft conversion a velux window can be the perfect solution for your pitched roof.  Here at Topflite Loft Conversions we have six easy steps to helping you choose the right velux window.

Follow these and you won’t go wrong, in fact you will soon have the loft conversion of your dreams!

Step 1

What do you want to achieve?

Consider the purpose of the room.  Is it a bedroom, a study or will it be a stairwell? How much light do you need and expect? Will it be a solution to a problem or do you want the window to really impress?

If your room receives more daylight it will feel and appear larger.  It is recommended that you have a 15% ration of glazed windows to floor space.

Step 2

Choose how the window opens

There are many ways to open a velux window.  Top-hung or centre pivot or even an electric velux.

Step 3

Natural or white?

Do you want your window to have a natural wood effect on show or would you rather a white window?  The choice is between natural pine or white polyuerthane.

Step 4

Velux windows have a toughened outer pane but you can opt for more glazing.  The more glazing you have the safer, more energy efficient the window will be.  It will also keep more sound out.

Step 5

Install and insulate

It is important that you have the right flashing for your roof covering.  It is also important that you insulate the area around the windows.  This is in accordance with Building Regulations and something here at Topflite Loft Conversions we know all about!

Step 6

Once all of the other five steps have been achieved you can then choose a blind to match in with your decor.  This is the final finishing to touch to creating the loft conversion you have been eagerly anticipating.
